Little Cap for S {Leila & Ben Giveaway!}

I relish every chance I get to put this boy up on the blog. I mean, look at that face. Can you blame me?

Each of my children have been so special to me for different reasons. Of course I love them for their own selves, but they each also hold a special place in our family. Hudson as the oldest; Abby as the girl (read: princess); and Stryder as the baby. I get so much joy out of watching him toddle around, hearing him growl, seeing him play with little cars. Babies are such a miracle. I get so choked up every time I think about him growing up.

Sob.

So anyway. I'm supposed to be talking about that cute hat on his head!

This was my first attempt at Leila & Ben's Little Cap pattern and my-oh-my did I fall in love. The pattern directions are simple and thorough, the pictures are helpful, and the style is great. I couldn't love this pattern more. (Well, maybe more if it came in my size, ha!)

I can confidently suggest this pattern to experienced sewists and beginners alike. This pattern made me feel like a pro, and I get comments on the hat everywhere we go. So, I am officially adding this pattern to the annals of the Best of Fall pattern review series!

It was made with ultra fine baby whale corduroy in a light gray (slate, maybe) for the outside, which I think I got from Joann's. The inside was made from the softest shirting flannel I have ever felt, purchased at Michael Levine's in the LA fabric district:

And guess what else I love? The Little Cap can be made with just two fat quarters of fabric, so it's a great scrap buster!

A note on size: I made the size 3T-5T for Stryder and it fits his little head perfectly. He just turned one year old, so this cap will definitely not fit him when he's 3-5. His head circumference is 18.5" and he's in the 85th percentile for head size, so maybe it's just his head size. I tried the cap on Abby and it would fit her perfectly with less elastic (her head circ. is 19.5 inches). I plan on making a cap for her in this size, either by leaving off the elastic or adding a little extra room in the pattern.  I'll keep you posted on my results.

Oh, and do you want to know about that ADORABLE SHIRT he's wearing?? It's my first attempt at the raglan tee from Figgy's Sewing for Boys. I have a post coming with full details on this tee (and a graphic I'm adding to it) so stay tuned!

I love my little boo:

Long-Sleeved Peasant Dress {tutorial} and Figgy's Giveaway!

Well, we have reached the end of our guest posts for the Best of Fall pattern review series. Wasn't that fun?? Thanks so much to those of you who have visited and commented over the week! Although our guests are gone, you've still got me and I have a couple more things to share with you.

As you may remember, I recently started sewing with the Ofelia pattern by Figgy's. This is a great, basic, peasant dress pattern with raglan-style sleeves and elastic in the neckline. The only problem is that it comes with short sleeves and I really need some warmer dresses for Abby now that Fall has finally arrived. So, obviously, I just went ahead and drafted my own long sleeves. Easy-peasy fall dress for Abby:

I can see this long-sleeved style becoming a Christmas dress for Abby, can't you? In the next picture Abby's wearing a really fancy, expensive scarf. No, not really. It's a rectangle of purple knit from my stash that probably cost about 25 cents in the LA fabric district! What she doesn't know won't hurt her.

Want to make your own long-sleeved peasant dress? It's easy!

Here are some really simple instructions for adding long sleeves to any peasant-style dress pattern, such as the Ofelia dress by Figgys.

First, get out your supplies. I use pattern tracing sheets from Joannes because they come on the bolt and I can buy REALLY LONG lengths. (Don't forget to use a coupon if you buy this stuff! It can be pricey). You also need a pen and a ruler.

1. Lay the short sleeved pattern piece on the tracing paper. On top of it, lay any long-sleeved pattern piece, or a long sleeved shirt from your daughter's closet to establish the length of your new sleeve. (I used a Flashback Skinny Tee sleeve the first time I did this.) NOTE: raglan sleeves start at the neckline. If you're using a normal set-in sleeve, such as the Flashback Skinny Tee, you will need to measure from the neckline to the wrist for length. Otherwise your sleeve will be a couple inches too short.

Mark the desired length on the tracing paper with a dot.

2. Trace around your short sleeve pattern piece. Then, starting where the short sleeve ends, draw a line to the dot you marked for long sleeve length.

Optional: curve the line a little bit so it doesn't look so boring and straight.

Next time I make these sleeves, I'm going to add a couple more inches to the length because they tend to creep up the arm. For fall or winter weather, I really want those Abby's little wrists covered up.

Now cut out your sleeve.

4. Fold it in half and match the arm pit points.

Check to see if the seam on your sleeve will match up. If there's a difference, like in the picture below, trim it off. This ensures that your sleeve seam will match up nicely while sewing.

The first time I made this sleeve, I brought it in at the wrist as you can see below. I wasn't very pleased with how it turned out. I suggest making the bottom of the sleeve wider and longer so there is plenty of coverage for cold weather. Shirring with elastic thread at the wrist will keep the sleeve from falling over her little hands.

Long sleeve versus short sleeve:

Now sew your dress according to the pattern instructions, using your long-sleeve pattern piece instead of the short sleeve. Hem the sleeves and then use elastic thread in your bobbin to shirr three rows around the wrist, starting about 1/2" from the edge of your sleeve. After shirring, steam or lightly spray the fabric with water. Apply heat from your iron and it will gather up beautifully! The elastic thread should give it plenty of stretch.

Tip: When sewing with elastic thread in my bobbin, I increase the tension on my machine and the stitch length as high as they will go.

Fabric: Anna Maria Horner's Loves Me Loves Me Not, in grape (from her Innocent Crush collection),
and a Michael Miller dot.

As I'm sure you already realized, this dress was used in the header for our Best of Fall pattern review series:

Guest Post by An of Straight Grain

Hello everyone, and happy Monday! We're back at it again with our final guest post for the Best of Fall pattern review series. I am so excited to welcome An from Straight-Grain as a guest today! I actually found An through Jessica, who posted a link somewhere to the adorable coat pictured below. Since then, I've fallen in love with An's style. There is something so simple, yet striking, about her work. She and I share a love of Japanese fabric, so I never tire of looking at the beautiful dresses she's made for her daughter. Plus, I can't help but adore her daughter's little bob haircut , since my own Abby-girl has the same style! If we didn't live on separate continents, our daughters would certainly be friends. Thanks so much for being here today, An!

**********************************************

Hi everyone, I am An from StraightGrain, and I’m so thrilled to be guest-posting here in this great series! My favorite fall pattern is Dear My Kids’ Double Breasted Coat, which I bought via their Etsy shop a good year ago. I made one last year, another one this year, and I’m pretty sure that I’ll make a lot more in the years to come (if not this year!).
The pattern is very affordable, and it has very detailed instructions and illustrations. This makes it ideal for beginning seamstresses.

But aside from these practical considerations, it’s just a beautiful design! Remember what little Caroline and John-John wore on their father John Kennedy’s funeral in 1963? Me neither, because I wasn’t born yet, but I’ve always been in love with pictures of the blue double breasted coats the tiny toddlers were wearing. DMK’s double breasted coat has that same classic style.

The pictures which accompany DMK’s pattern show it more in a ‘Spring’ version, made with regular cotton, but I like it most as a Winter’s coat in a wool-mix. So what changes did make to the pattern?
In terms of styling, I added some buttons in the front, to make it look more like a classic double-breasted coat. I also added piping (an idea I saw here) for a more vintage look. The original pattern instructs to use lining fabric on one side of the collar, but I used outside fabric on both sides, to create a more professional look.

To make the coat warmer, I used insulating facing throughout (I ironed it on the wrong side of the outside fabric), but I don’t feel like it does much. So next time, I think I’ll just line it with fleece.

One thing I changed is that I added facing in the front of the coat. It’s warmer, more professional, and it makes sure that the lining is not showing on the outside of the coat.

Finally, I’ll end with two little tips which might be useful. (1) Before you start, take a pen and write  on the instructions where you will insert a loop to hang the coat. I planned to sew in a loop, but I forgot, and regretted it later. (2) A friend of mine who also made the coat, used the embroidery function of her machine to put her daughter’s name on the inside of the jacket. It looks incredibly classy!

Caila, thank you so much for having me here! I’ve really enjoyed reading all the previous posts in this series.

Aren't those coats amazing? This post gets even better because you have a chance to win THREE YARDS OF FABRIC (with free shipping) from The Fabric Fairy

I cannot say enough good things about this shop. Megan is one of the nicest shop owners out there. She is quick to respond to questions, very helpful, and runs a great Facebook page. I bought the fabric for Hudson's awesome Space Shirt, and the fabric for Abby's Retro Love Racerback Dress from her shop. The Fabric Fairy is especially well known for carrying an amazing array of fold over and ruffle elastic:

Guest Post by Rachael of Imagine Gnats

Happy Saturday everybody! Ready for more fall fun? Today I'm welcoming Rachael from Imagine Gnats as part of our Best of Fall pattern review series. I first got to know Rachael when she was co-hosting Shorts on the Line with Carla and Vanessa. That was a fun month filled with lots of shorts (and fun prizes for me when the judges awarded me second place!). Rachael is never anything but encouraging and she's a fun lady to follow. Check out how the incorporated this cute skirt into a fall outfit!

*************************************************************************

a lazy (fall) days skirt

hi! i'm Rachael from imagine gnats and i'm super happy to be posting here today as part of Caila's best of fall patterns series!

last fall, i made this Oliver + S family reunion dress and also whipped up a pair of flannel pjs for each of my two girls. so far, this fall has been completely insane and i've done very little preparation for colder weather sewing... there's still time, right?

recently, my 4yo informed me that "pants don't work for me." yup, out of the mouths of babes. so i knew i would need to find a way to skirt-ify her winter wardrobe.

a lazy (fall) days skirt

so, i turned to a tried and true skirt favorite, the Oliver + S lazy days skirt. (a free download, no less!) i truly regard Oliver + S as the gold standard of kids' patterns, and this skirt pattern is a wonderfully simple example of what i love about Oliver + S... clear directions, fabulous style, professional finishing, and thoughtful details.

i made the skirt out of Robert Kaufman 21 wale corduroy in kiwi from sewn studio with a contrasting (pink, of course) grosgrain ribbon.

a lazy (fall) days skirt

i'm fairly certain that someone likes her new skirt ;) and we have lots of leggings to pair it with. fyi, my favorite leggings patterns are: Sunki by Figgy's and Iris by Green Bee Patterns.

thanks so much for having me today, Caila!

xo, rachael

Guest Post from Jessica of A Little Gray

This week has been so much fun for me, and now I get to welcome Jessica from A Little Gray to our Best of Fall pattern review series! I can't even remember how I first found Jessica, but I think it had to do with Project Run and Play. I remember she made a fantastic Chevron Circle Skirt and I thought, "Who is this talented woman??" She went on to win Season 4 of Project Run and Play, and wows me frequently with her stylish kids's clothes. I especially love what she sews for her boy (this outfit is my favorite!), because I find it a constant challenge (albeit an exciting one) to sew great clothes for my boys. On top of sewing for her kids, Jessica makes some amazing quilts. She always has something fun going on at her blog, A Little Gray, so don't hesitate to go check it out. And don't miss the chance to leave Jessica some comment love below! Thanks for joining us, Jessica!

*****************************************

Hi, I'm Jessica from a Little Gray and I'm so happy to be here on Caila's blog today. She is really one of the sweetest bloggers out there, and so creative!

I have a lot of favorite basic patterns I've been using lately. But sometimes fall sewing is about going beyond basics to some really special accessories. And sometimes fall sewing is just about Halloween! The Cozy Winter Hood pattern from Little Things to Sew by Liesl Gibson is the perfect fall hat pattern for kids. So adorable for their every day cold weather hat, and so easy to adapt into their costume.

This year I've decided to simplify Halloween a little by making both my kids the same costume- bats. My 3 year old Hendrix has become obsessed with referring to all of us as bats lately for some reason, calling us Mommy Bat, Daddy Bat, Baby Bat, and Big Boy Bat. Kids are so hilariously weird aren't they?

So I made both kids the cozy winter hood in a size medium. (He is too busy at preschool to model for me today, but this is Baby Bat, aka Elsie.) I simply changed the ear pattern piece to make it longer and pointy like bat ears. I used a really sparkly black costume polyester for the outside of the hoods, and a print from Tula Pink's spooky Night Shade line for the lining. I love the moons and storm clouds, very ominous!

This pattern really comes together so perfectly, just like all Oliver & S patterns. This is one of those craft books that you will actually use a lot, so if you don't own it yet, get it! I love it so much I led a sew-along thru most of it last year on my blog.

The only tricky part with my bat version was getting the ears to have the perfect amount of perky. You have to tack the ears open on the inside with a couple hand stitches, and it's kinda hard to get both the ears to stick up evenly. But it's a short step and it was easy to give it another try until the position was right.

Here is the every day version I made her last year with the ears as they are shaped in the pattern. Tiny 8 month old Elsie barely filled out the extra small back then! I used purple fine wale corduroy on the outside and soft white minky on the inside. It's great that this pattern lends itself to using such soft fall fabrics with different textures. I'd love to try a velveteen and flannel version as well.

Thanks so much for having me Caila, I've been really inspired with this series to keep on sewing through my kids' wardrobe!
